Graduate Requirements
The M.S. and Ph.D. degrees require 30 and 90 credit hours, respectively
- Students have ample opportunity to enroll in courses other than those formally required
- All candidates must complete at least 30 credit hourse of graduate work in residence
Foreign Language or Research Skill
One of these requirements must be fulfilled by all Ph.D. candidates, and M.S. students who chose the report option. None of the courses used to fulfill either requirement carries graduate credit.
The foreign language requirement consists of:
- A minimum of 6 credit hr of a foreign language
- EITHER completion of a 491/492 sequence with grades of "B" or higher in an approved language (French, German, Russian, or Spanish)
- OR a pass in the Graduate School Foreign Language Test (GSFLT). Students cannot satisfy this requirement in their native language.
- Non-native speakers may petition to use English as a foreign language. The Center for English Language Training (CELT) provides the necessary verification of English proficiency.
- The requirement can be met using another language well-represented in the scientific literature, if approved by the advisory committee and the University Graduate School.
The research skill requirement consists of:
A minimum of 6 credit hourse of approved courses in one of five specific themes:
- Applied Mathematics
- Statistics and probability
- Computing, programming, and numerical analysis
- Electronics
- Chemical analysis
Courses are selected from a designated list of offerings, principally at the 300-400 level. All course must be taken within a single groupingunless a combination from different groups is specifically approved by the Committee for Graduate Study.
