- New research was continued with colleagues in three new areas of applied rock mechanics. This involved establishing procedures for working with non-traditional specimens for strength testing and characterization of fracture properties. The investigations required working to establish procedures compatible with accepted ASTM Standards and then conducting testing for three different projects in conjunction with other researchers on campus. One involved the strength of clays with applications for archeological investigations into early advances in pottery strength and a second involved the fracture characteristics of chiton shells with application to damage and preservation characteristics prior to burial.
Research related to teaching and learning
- Followed up on work with School of Education PhD student Orvil White to adapt techniques in laboratory exercises used in GEOL-G 105 for the teaching of geologic time. This will be part of an ongoing study using students in a single class to see whether teaching techniques can solve the problems associated with non-science majors grasping concepts related to large numbers with a particular emphasis on geologic time.
- Participated with Dr. J. Elkins from the Department of Geology at Bowling Green State University that is investigating how students handle learning in field-based setting. The project specifically addresses how the environment itself, referred to as novelty space, can affect the student's ability to learn.
- Initiated a study to investigate decision making in a field-based learning environment. This study addresses what is not a unique situation for many real life situations, but one that is common in teaching within the earth and environmental sciences – the use of field-based learning. The field component adds a new dimension to the decision making process that involves both spatial and temporal components that are linked to the student's ability to make decisions and learn to problem solve.
